“So what can we learn from this study? On the data side, we see that everything is proceeding as planned. Nobody’s paying $50 for a burger at McDonald’s, or $16 for a can of tuna at Safeway. Employers wish their profits were higher, and workers are glad they got a raise, but they wish they made more money. Three years after Seattle started down the road to $15, everything is as it should be. Those apocalyptic claims of destruction and business closures haven’t been proven true. One thing the study didn’t explain was why the sky didn’t fall as promised. Why weren’t workers laid off in droves, or replaced with robots? Why didn’t prices skyrocket? Why does Seattle have more restaurants now than at any point in its history? It’s because those workers who saw a raise now have more money to spend in the city around them. Those restaurant workers are eating in more restaurants. They’re buying more groceries. They’re buying more clothes and cars. That increased consumer demand is creating jobs, and more than paying for the increased minimum wage. The $15 minimum wage established a positive feedback loop that created growth in Seattle by including more people in the economy. In other words, it worked exactly as intended.”
I have such a great admiration for Bertha Benz, business partner and wife of Karl Benz. This remarkable woman was a true pioneer and the first person to drive an automobile over a long distance, in 1888. This vehicle was the Benz Patent Motorwagen, considered to be the world’s first production automobile. During the trip, she used her hat pin to clear a blocked fuel line and a garter as insulation material! A tireless supporter of her husband’s inventions, she also used part of her dowry to invest in his iron company, before they were married. After she married, according to German law, Bertha lost her legal power to act as an investor.
In 2008, the 121-mile long Bertha Benz Memorial Route opened, tracing her original journey. We take cars for granted these days and indeed, some might say the car has done as much harm as it’s done good. However Bertha’s work changed history and at a time when few women’s efforts were recognised. She died in 1944 aged 95, having outlived her husband by 15 years.
apparently my boss who is a professor at my school doesn’t have a cell phone and his coworkers were upset by this so they bought him a childs toy phone and labeled it “David’s jitterbug” (for those of you that don’t know jitterbugs are phones made for old people that have like massive buttons and shit) so the other day I walked into his office to ask him a question and he pressed a button on it which made it start loudly playing the ABCs and he said “excuse me I have to take this” and then started singing along to the ABCs while shooing me out of his office
this is the phone. he apparently was in the middle of a meeting with the department the other day and got annoyed so he pressed a button, said “I have to take this” and left
This the hardest nigga I ever seen this is true big dick energy
God got him
Wow
Found this short documentary from 2014 about him and his forest:
Soil erosion is still a problem but the authorities do not appear to be listening to Jadav’s suggestions on combating the issue, according to the programme. He would like to plant coconut trees because they grow extremely straight and help prevent erosion if planted densely enough. The fruit could also be sold for economic gain.
The man turned that barren land into a whole fucking forest by hand for them. Yet they show no interest in investing in its upkeep nor the desire for financial gain via the coconut industry. I just…🙄
i was a little apprehensive to watch this because it’s four minutes long and i have a short attention span, but within the first 30 seconds i was hooked.
watch this. please, you won’t regret it.
Incredible
I watched this with tears rolling down my face. I urge everyone to also watch it… especially Americans. You are about to have your midterm elections and at the moment you have a Nazi in power. Keep him in power and this woman will be your grandchild in 70 years time.
